Assistantships, Funding and Awards

Assistantships

All applicants for graduate study in composition (M.M. and D.M.A. levels) are eligible for HHSOM assistantships. To be considered for these assistantships, students should apply by December 1. For specific information about applying for graduate study at the HHSOM, visit here

Composition students are most successful at securing funding through the assistantships listed below, all of which include full in-state or out-of-state tuition remission, access to subsidized health insurance, and a competitive stipend per year.

Aural Skills assistantships involve teaching small-enrollment aural skills sections in the undergraduate core sequence. Interested candidates should highlight relevant coursework and experiences in their applications and may be asked to take part in a virtual interview.

Music Technology assistantships involve teaching an undergraduate-level Introduction to Music Technology course and/or assisting with the electronic studios of the Dancz Center (course support, booking, technology maintenance). Interested candidates should highlight relevant coursework and experiences in their applications and may be asked to take part in a virtual interview.

Arts Collaborative (previously known as Ideas for Creative Exploration) funds assistantships for interdisciplinary and collaborative projects in Music, Art, and Theatre and Film Studies. Arts Collaborative assistants are funded for 2 years. DMA students funded via ICE receive a third-year assignment in the Hugh Hodgson School of Music. Interested candidates should include a one-page description of experiences with interdisciplinary work and proposed future projects with their applications.

Artslab funds assistantships to applicants whose research in the arts exhibits disciplinary innovation, public impact, or interdisciplinary engagement. Funding is renewable for up to 3 years. Interested candidates should include a one-page description of experiences describing the proposed research or creative activity stating its disciplinary innovation, public impact, or interdisciplinary engagement.

Funding for UGA Students

The New Music Opportunity Travel Fund has been established to provide funding for student composers and performers at the Hugh Hodgson School of Music to participate in festivals, concerts, symposia, conferences, and other related activities with a new music focus (recently composed). This opportunity is open to all undergraduate and graduate students majoring in music composition or performance at the Hugh Hodgson School of Music (interested music students from other majors will be considered on a case by case basis). Competitive programs through juried selection processes will be ranked higher for support.

The UGA Hugh Hodgson School of Music Travel Support Fund supports student travel through the generous support from The Clementi L. Holder Student Opportunity Support Fund and The Powell
Family Professional Travel Fund.

Idea Lab Mini Grants support new creative interdisciplinary projects. Grant recipients are provided with a mentor and are eligible for up to $1000 in support for project expenses. Collaborative teams must include participants from multiple disciplines and include at least one student, faculty, or staff member from UGA. Proposals will be reviewed by an interdisciplinary selection committee in order of receipt, pending the availability of funds.

Graduate School Graduate Student Travel Program provides competitive travel funding for students presenting their research at conferences and professional meetings. Domestic Travel Grants are open to all graduate students while International Travel Grants are open to doctoral and students pursuing terminal degrees only.

The Willson Center Graduate Research Award (up to $1250) provides support to arts and humanities graduate students for relevant expenses related to completion of their terminal degree.
